Moérie products do not contain ethyl alcohol. On the other hand, some ingredients have the word "alcohol" in their name. However, despite being called "alcohols," fatty alcohols (such as cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl, or even behenyl alcohol) and ethyl alcohol (ethanol) have different specificities and properties in cosmetics. The similarity in their names comes from the fact that they contain the chemical compound alcohol (-OH). The rest of their chemical structure gives them different qualities and characteristics.
Fatty alcohols are nothing like ethyl alcohol, neither in appearance nor properties. Fatty alcohols are fatty, waxy substances with remarkable cosmetic qualities, including film-forming, emollient, hydrating, softening, and protective effects.
Cetearyl alcohol is used in cosmetics: as an emollient, emulsifier, emulsion stabilizer, opacifier, and viscosity regulator. Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol used in a wide variety of cosmetic formulations as a fragrance component, preservative, solvent, and viscosity-decreasing agent. Although “alcohol” is in their names, these ingredients do not contain any ethanol.
